DIY Security Systems
You’ve decided that you have what it takes to install an alarm system yourself. So, down to the electrical store, back home and it’ll be ready in time for you to watch the big game tonight, right?
Hmm.. possibly, but I wouldn’t put money on it. A home kit is easy to install, but it requires some planning and consideration when you begin. Remember all those pieces of furniture you’ve assembled, ignoring the instructions, only to find that one screw left at the end? You don’t want that happening here. So here’s a quick checklist of how to install it yourself:
- Read the instructions. Twice. Familiarize yourself with all the components (is everything there?) and how it all fits together.
- Make a plan of where everything is going to go. You should have done this before you bought the kit, so that you know you’re bought the correct detectors, and the correct number of them. Now place each component in the position you’re going to install it.
- Pay particular attention to the control unit. Don’t put it too close to a window or door – you don’t want the burglar breaking it, do you? Don’t hide it so that you can’t hear it or get to it if you need to turn it off quickly. It should also be near an electrical socket, because it’s going to need power.
- Install the control panel. This will mean connecting to your power supply and will involve a wire (ok - so it’s not completely wireless). Most just require a simple plug, but if it needs more than that and you’re unsure, hire an electrician for this bit. Most panels come with a back-up battery but that‘s all this is – a back up if the main power fails. Don’t rely on it as your main source of power.
- Make sure the control panel is linked up to all of your sensors, and the signal is being received properly
- Install the sirens. Don’t worry about these being hidden – actually if they are seen, they can deter would be burglars. The sirens will also need a wire (that’s the last – promise), and need programming to the control panel. Check the instructions – each kit is different, but will come complete information on how to do this.
- Test the system. Make sure everything works as you're expecting (you might want to warn the neighbours in advance that there might be a siren or two going off). You wouldn’t want to go to all that trouble, only for your home to be broken into next weekend because you didn’t test it properly, would you?
- Keep all the instructions, including reset codes etc in a home safe. You won’t forget where they are, and it’s also fireproof.
Remember, this is a recommended checklist for you and a guide as to what to expect. Each system is different, so follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter, and your home or business will be safely secured for years to come.
